My Food Photography Gear
Interested in learning what food photography equipment I use? Since I am a Nikon shooter, some of my equipment will only be compatible with Nikon cameras, so make sure to look for gear that is compatible with your camera brand. I am not an affiliate and do not make money from these links, these are just some products that I use and love! Let’s get started!
Cameras
I started out shooting with Canon, but made the switch to Nikon and I currently shoot with the Nikon Z6 Mirrorless Camera. This is a full-frame camera, however I started my food photography journey with a cropped-sensor camera. I used to shoot with the Canon EOS Rebel T7. This was a really great entry-level camera to start out with.
Lenses
My three most used lenses are the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 s, Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 lens, and Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 s lens. I love the 85mm for food portraiture and the 105mm for macro shots to capture gorgeous details. The 24-70mm lens is great for overhead shots and for restaurant work. I use it a lot for restaurant work so I don’t have to change my lens so often.
Tripod and C-Stand
I use a Manfrotto 055 Tripod with a 3 way head. I also use a c-stand for overhead shots.
For my c-stand setup:
Manfrotto Monopod Quick Release Head
Sandbag
Artificial Lighting
I use both natural and artificial light, but I love that artificial light gives me so much creative freedom. Below are my gear recs for artificial light.
Godox V860ii Flash for Nikon Cameras
Godox XProN Wireless Flash Trigger for Nikon Cameras
Large diffuser
Black and white foam boards to block and reflect light (you can find these at your local arts and crafts store)
Editing Software
I used to edit with Lightroom, but I have since made the switch to Capture One Pro. I also use Adobe Photoshop for retouching.
Tethering Gear
As soon as I started tethering, I was hooked! Here are the supplies I use for tethering:
Tether Tools 10 ft cable (this will be specific to your camera and laptop)
TetherBLOCK Cable Mounting Plate
I tether to Capture One Pro
Backup batteries for your camera
Other Gear and Accessories
There is so much gear out there that you acquire as you go along. Here are some examples:
Hard Drives
Steel clamps
Graphics Tablet for retouching
As you can see, there is so much gear that photographers acquire over time. A good way to save money is to buy refurbished or used as long as you purchase from a reputable source such as B&H Photo or Adorama.
